John Nulty is our Featured Citizen of the Month for August 2013. John and his twin brother Michael were born
and raised in San Francisco. Aside from being a native, John is a fifth-generation San Franciscan. John has spent most of
his life as an activist and volunteer. While John has tackled a myriad of community issues, his greatest passion is for
trees and open space in San Francisco. John’s connection to trees and open space led him to his work as a long time
volunteer for Friends of the Urban Forest, and his work with Friends of Boedekker Park. He is most proud of his years of
planting, surveying, and advocating for trees in the downtown neighborhoods. At an event honoring John for his years
of community service, Congresswoman Jackie Spear said of him, “John is the Johnny Appleseed of Organizations and
Trees.”
John takes great pride in being part of grassroots activism. He was instrumental in the development of entities
such as North of Market/Tenderloin Community Benefit District, Civic Center Community Benefit District, and is a cofounder of Alliance for a Better District 6. John also has a history of working with local police to help with community
policing programs and relationship building.
John’s dedication to community activism has helped countless community members improve the quality of
their lives and neighborhoods. We commend John for his lifetime of commitment, dedication, and hard work to bring
about positive change to the Midtown community. We thank you, John, and are happy to present you as the Featured
Citizen of the Month for August 2013.
